Can I Do Barre While Recovering From an Injury?

There are some workouts that are safer than others when it comes to working out while recovering from an injury, and barre is one of them. In fact, because of barre’s low-impact and use of stabilizing muscles, it can also be used as a great “next step” after physical therapy. Orthopedic Physical Therapist, Laura Christiansen, says that “barre classes give a great option for strengthening some of the forgotten muscles of the glutes, thighs and calves…as well as focuses on balance and mobility, something most classes seem to overlook.” So how do you know it’s time for you to get back to the barre? I’ve broken down three important steps to take and consider when deciding whether you should do barre while recovering from an injury.

1.) Get the “OK” From Dr. I made this the first step because it’s the most important step. You must get clearance from your doctor that you are able to return to physical activity. For barre specifically, it might be a good idea to explain to them what the class entails. Be sure to ask what you can and cannot do and what precautions you should take. Depending on the injury, you will also want to know whether you need to wear any type of support while working out (brace, wrap, etc).

2.) Communicate With Your Instructor. Once you know it is safe for you to return to class, you will want to  let your instructor know specific details of what injury you are recovering from, that you have been given the “ok” from your physician to return and be clear on any precautions you may need to take. It is important that you communicate with your instructor before class starts so that they will be able to offer you specific modifications. Be sure to listen to all the cues and be even more aware of your body and it’s movement. You should also let the instructor know during and after class how the exercises felt and whether or not you might need more options for next time.

3.) Modifications are Your Friends. While recovering from an injury, it is important to give yourself grace. It is not reasonable to assume you will be right back to where you left off straight away. Pace yourself. Modifications are there for you to take, and consider them “stepping stones” to help get you back to where you left off. Depending on the injury, a few options you may want to take are limiting your ROM, go at a slower pace, provide support (brace, sneakers, thicker mat) and use props for added assistance. You will also want to do more stretching before and after class.

I know from experience that it can be equal parts exciting and intimidating to get back to exercising after being out for a while with an injury. Luckily, barre provides so many different safe options to allow us to get back sooner than other forms of workouts. But it is still important to make sure you follow the necessary steps to ensure you don’t do further damage. Get clearance from your doctor, talk to your instructor and be patient with yourself and your progress and before you know it, you will be the Barre Star you once were in no time at all!
